The Six Sigma Methodology is based on the usage of multiple tools and statistical techniques in a structured and definite manner. The five steps that have to be rigorously applied in order to achieve Six Sigma levels are

Define -Describes the problem through a Project charter, defining the business case(Top Line Impact), Opportunity Statement,(Bottom Line Impact), Goal (Time Targets), Scope (Inclusions/Exclusions), Project Plan and the team. The CTQ (Critical To Quality) and CTP(Critical To Process) Parameters are identified as measurables for the project

Measure - Where the extent of the problem is measured in quantitative terms and the data is presented graphically.

Analyse -Analyzing the root cause and validating it through analytical tools.

Improve -Implementing Improvement actions only after the validation of the solution. The impact on CTQ and CTP are also monitored.

Control -Control actions ensure that the problem will never reoccur.

When these steps are used repeatedly to solve a wide gamut of problems , not only are the improvements disseminated throughout the organization , they also become the basis for sustained long term growth.
At Anand, we have three tiers; Black Belt, Green Belt and White Belt, as opposed to two tiers Black and Green Belts at GE, Motorola etc. By adding a White Belt level, a hundred percent coverage of all personnel in plants is ensured. In this way the "Total Employee Involvement" aspect of Six Sigma as a driver of cultural change has been stressed.
