The implementation of the Six Sigma training program is two pronged with a simultaneous focus on statistical and behavioural tools. The initiative is phased in three stages. The White Belt, Green Belt and the Black Belt.
The White Belt training provides inputs on basic quality tools, which then have to be applied hands on, on a project.
The Green Belt training provides for more advanced tools i.e. the various kinds of run charts and their application on more complex projects.
The Black Belt training teaches advanced statistical and management tools that have to be applied on improving a critical business area that should result in a significant monetary saving. |

Black Belt certification can take place either by the regular route i.e. completion of the White Belt, Green Belt and then the Black belt certifications; or by the accelerated route. In the accelerated or direct route the Black Belts are nominated by the plant heads and screened through apptitude and behvioural tests. Then they undergo a 4 weeks training program, spread over a period of about 6 months. During these 6 months a Black Belt project also has to be completed.Black Belt certification is complete only when the Black belt has completed two projects.
The White Belt certification process is only complete when both the QLI-W and the BLI-W trainings have been completed ; the project has been executed and the project log maintained and summarized. Similarly the Green Belt certification is only complete when both the BLI-G and QLI-G courses have been successfully completed , the project execution is complete and the report on BLI-G applications submitted. |

It is envisaged that at least 80% of the total work force in a plant should be White Belts. 25% should be Green Belts. The number of Black Belts depends on the complexity of operations (includes/excludes design, marketing, etc). However one per 100 is recommended where only operations are involved. |

Participants can be nominated for the BLI and QLI courses in any order , however a complete White Belt certification is mandatory, before one is eligible for the Green Belt. Similarly the complete Green Belt certification is a must before a participant is eligible for the Black Belt program. |
